BioElwen was born in Tirion, twenty-five years (as years are now reckoned) before the destruction of the Trees and the flight of the Noldor. Her mother was one of the few women to leave her husband behind in Valinor, seeking adventure and new lands, and Elwen went with her. They joined Turgon's host and ended up in Gondolin.
Elwen studied mathematics and accounting and spent many years as Salgant's clerk, a job which she lost in acrimonious circumstances, being convicted of stealing from her employer to fund an escape attempt from the Hidden City. She was sentenced to seven years' unpaid service to Prince Argon, where she has been making herself quietly useful ever since.
Elwen is rumoured to have come up with a proof for Rúmil's Conjecture of Indices, reputedly only ever solved by Feanor (who never wrote down his proof). However, she has yet to publish her work, being occupied with her responsibilities as Prince Argon's clerk.
